Billie Eilish Defies Met Gala’s ‘No Selfies’ Rule

In 2015, the Met Gala and its sponsor, Vogue, put in place a prohibition on attendees taking personal photos during the event. The rule was implemented to limit the distractions and screen time of the celebrities attending, as they could neither take a selfie on their phone nor post on social media.

In every year since 2015, at least one celebrity has broken the golden rule, gathering around with friends in the bathrooms to grab a quick picture and show it off to the world.

This year, the rule violator was pop singer Billie Eilish, an Academy Award and Grammy winner, who posted a photo to her Instagram Story dressed in a gothic all-black look, alongside Elle Fanning, Maya Hawke and Halle Bailey, who all dawned white dresses.

Fans noted that in the photo is a sign on the mirror bathroom that reads: “NO SMOKING NO VAPING.”

Breaking one rule of the Gala while photographing some of the other rules is certainly ironic, and seems an intentional way to say these stars do not play by the rules. In the past, other celebrities, such as Bella Hadid, have even posted while smoking at the Gala itself.

This year’s Met Gala was in honor of the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, titled Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. Attendees dressed in honor of Lagerfeld’s design and raised money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, which documents fashion throughout centuries.
