Billie Eilish and Janelle Monáe sat together for drinks at the Support + Feed’s fall fundraiser this week.
Unlike the usual formal fundraising events celebrities go to, this one seemed pretty casual. The “What Was I Made For?” singer wore a black windbreaker and drank Liquid Death water as she sat across Monáe.
Monáe was honored with an Inspiration Award for her own initiative called Wondalunch, which also partnered with Support + Feed to feed Los Angeles families.
In her acceptance speech, she called herself a “child of service” and talked about her family and their roles in serving the community.
“I remember what it was like not to have food on the table,” she recalled. “What it was like for Thanksgiving and Christmas, to have to get canned goods from your church, or the Salvation Army, or an aunt or your grandmother — I remember that,” she said. “I remember the stigma of what it was to be poor and how we treated poor people. I remember being embarrassed using my mother’s EBT card and her food stamps. I remember how that felt, and so all I’ve wanted to do and what I wanted to do with Support + Feed and with Wondalunch, is to erase that narrative.”
“We should never feel ashamed of needing help,” she concluded.
Support + Feed is a nonprofit that focuses on providing plant-based food to communities in need. It was founded by Eilish’s mother, Maggie Baird, in 2020. Since then, they have worked with ten cities nationwide, including Atlanta, New York City, New Orleans and Washington D.C.
Eilish wasn’t the only child to support their mother’s event as her older brother, Finneas, was also there. Others who attended the event include Moby, record producer Benny Blanco and Clueless star Alicia Silverstone.
In May, Eilish broke up with her boyfriend, Jesse Rutherford, the lead singer of the band The Neighborhood.
