Bill Murray Shouts Out Late 'Ghostbusters'™ Star Harold Ramis While Presenting At Oscars

Bill Murray adlibbed a quick tribute to the late Harold Ramis while presenting the cinematography Oscar alongside Amy Adams on Sunday night.

Bill Murray Honors Harold Ramis At Oscars

After Murray and his co-presenter Adams listed off Best Cinematography nominees Gravity, The Grandmaster, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska and Prisoners, he added a sixth.

“We forgot one,” Murray began his impromptu tribute. “Harold Ramis, for Caddyshack, Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day.”

While Murray gave his shoutout to the late actor and filmmaker, Adams looked on with a smile. The audience, familiar with Ramis’ groundbreaking work in comedy cinema, enthusiastically applauded the impromptu addition.

Over the last two decades, Murphy and Ramis – once close friends – were estranged. Before their falling out due to onset drama while filming Groundhog Day in 1993, they’d teamed up to create a number of iconic movies and characters. Murphy, who reconciled with Ramis before his death due to autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis, remembered him fondly in a statement to Time magazine.

“Harold Ramis and I together did the National Lampoon Show off Broadway, Meatballs, Stripes, Caddyshack, Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day,” his statement read. “He earned his keep on this planet. God bless him.”

Dan Akroyd, Chevy Chase Remember Ramis

Two other well-known comedy actors of Ramis’ era – Dan Akroyd and Chevy Chase – also released statements in the aftermath of Ramis’ passing to issue him praise and express their sadness.

"Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my brilliant, gifted, funny friend, co-writer/performer and teacher Harold Ramis. May he now get the answers he was always seeking,” Aykroyd, who starred with Ramis in Ghostbusters, said in a statement.

“It was Harold who acted out and gave me the inspiration for the character of Clark Griswold [from National Lampoon's],” Chase said. “I was really copying Harold’s impression of Clark. He was a truly funny and highly intelligent man with great honesty and a great appreciation for the best kind of comedy."
