Bill Maher‘s HBO show Real Time returned after a two-month break on Friday. And, as is characteristic for the 62-year-old comedian, he quickly got controversial. Maher included a joke in his opening monologue questioned the nature of President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s relationship.

“He did nothing when they told him Russia was meddling in our elections, he fired Comey when he was looking into that shit, he wants to get out of NATO, he met Putin five times,” Maher said. “That’s a lot of times in just a couple of years, always with nobody around. Nobody can know what they’re doing.”
“Forget collusion, I want to know if there’s penetration,” he finished as the audience gasped and even cheered.

This isn’t the first time homophobic insults have been hurled at Trump. Late Show host Stephen Colbert was investigated by the Federal Communications Commission after he insulted the president and said his mouth was only good for “being Vladimir Putin’s cock holster,” in May of 2017.
Colbert later said he’d “do it again,” referring to the monologue that became an internet hit, but “would change a few words that were cruder than they needed to be,” and skirt around FCC regulations.
Maher, a strong critic of political correctness, faced backlash in June 2017, a month later, after he used a racial slur in a joke during an interview with Republican Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.).
Trump, who tried to campaign as the “most LGBTQ friendly candidate ever,” has been awful for the LGBTQ community in America. In his first year as president, he tried to reinstate a ban of trans people in the military, started a “Religious Liberty Task Force” which seems to serve only as an attack on the community, and rolled back many pro-LGBTQ Obama era laws and memos.
