Amid speculation that he is linked to Jeffrey Epstein, Bill Gates has spoken out about being “a subject of misinformation” and urged the public to focus on issues such as climate change.
According to a book by New York Times journalist Anupreeta Das that was released this summer, Epstein homed in on Gates in 2010 when he and Warren Buffett launched The Giving Pledge, a charity campaign to which they promised 99% of their wealth. Epstein believed this initiative was a new “way to make money” and restore his public image.
Das said that Epstein started to “tunnel his way into Gates’ orbit,” which he did successfully. He and Gates became friends, with Gate even referring to Epstein as his “buddy” at one point.
Gates appeared on NBC’s Today program last week to discuss his new Netflix series, The Future With Bill Gates, which discusses AI and misinformation.
“Misinformation is the one where, you know, I have been a subject of misinformation. I talked to Lady Gaga who had it maybe even worse,” he said.
Gates was also asked about climate change, specifically whether his grandchildren inspire him to combat the problem more swiftly.
“Oh, definitely,” he answered.”My first grandchild is actually here in New York City and couldn’t be cuter. She’s about one or so now.”
“And we’re not making enough progress, you know, and the damage kind of accumulates over time,” Gates continued. “So the need to innovate – I met a lot of young activists who are really harsh about, you know, we’re not doing enough I found that, you know, inspiring and motivating.”
The former Microsoft CEO was not asked about his own fossil fuel usage, as he is known for having four private jets and has previously argued that he focuses his efforts on decreasing his carbon footprint in other ways.
