Bill Cosby’s Appeal Of His Sexual Assault Conviction Set For Key Hearing

Bill Cosby‘s lawyers are headed back to the Pennsylvania Superior Court in Harrisburg this week to fight for Cosby’s appeal of his sexual assault conviction. In April 2018, Cosby was found guilty of drugging and molesting Andrea Constand at his Philadelphia home in 2004. He was sentenced to ten years in September 2018 and has remained in prison ever since.

Cosby’s current team for his appeal includes two attorneys, Barbara Zemlock and Kristin Weisenburger, and his spokesperson, Andrew Wyatt. This hearing will take place in front of a three-judge panel, but the decision on the appeal will not be decided for weeks.

If the appeal is not successful, he will continue to serve his ten-year sentence. Cosby’s lawyers explained in the case that the focus of this appeal would be to question if Cosby’s trial in Montgomery County, Penn., was fair and properly conducted.

More specifically, Cosby’s team will be examining the actions of Judge Steven O’Neil during this trial. Cosby’s brief for his appeal lists many alleged errors that O’Neil may have made in the trail. However, during October 2018, Cosby requested a new trial after his hearing with O’Neil, but it was ultimately denied.

Cosby’s case is known as the first trial of the #MeToo Movement. Cosby’s conviction has been seen as a form of punishment for his different incidents of sexual misconduct with at least five-dozen women, incidents that date as far back as 1960.

Cosby remains one of the only celebrities to go to prison for sexual misconduct. The sexual assault case against R.Kelly, which consists of four different sets of sex-crime charges, is still under investigation and pending.
