On Friday, President Joe Biden publicly acknowledged his seventh grandchild for the first time. The four-year-old girl is the daughter of Biden’s son Hunter and an Arkansas woman, Lunden Roberts.

“Our son Hunter and Navy’s mother, Lunden, are working together to foster a relationship that is in the best interests of their daughter, preserving her privacy as much as possible going forward,” Biden said in a statement. He continued, noting that this was “not a political issue” but a “family matter.”

The president also referred to his seven grandchildren during an episode of On Purpose with Jay Shetty that aired on Monday. “I have seven grandkids, five of ‘em old enough to talk on the phone, you know, every day I either text or call them.”

Hunter Biden’s paternity was confirmed by DNA test after Roberts had sued him for child support. Hunter had previously written about meeting Roberts in his 2021 memoir, recalling that it came at a time when he was abusing alcohol and drugs like crack cocaine. He also said that he doesn’t remember their encounter. “That’s how little connection I had with anyone. I was a mess, but a mess I’ve taken responsibility for,” he wrote.
