Beyoncé made history Sunday night at the 63rd annual Grammy Awards when she became the first singer to win 28 Grammy trophies.
The superstar first appeared on the live show to accept Best Rap Performance for her collaboration on “Savage” with Megan Thee Stallion. Beyoncé mostly stood up there cheering Stallion on for her third win of the night. After her speech, host Trevor Noah interrupted to announce that Beyoncé had know been tied to hold the record for the most Grammy wins by a singer, male or female.
Later in the night, Beyoncé broke that record when she won Best R&B Performance with “Black Parade.” “As an artist, I believe it’s my job and all of our jobs to reflect the times and it’s been such a difficult time, so I wanted too uplift and encourage all the beautiful Black queens and kings who continue to inspire me and inspire the world,” she said in her acceptance speech.
The delayed 2021 Grammy Awards looked different this year due to the pandemic. Instead of being held at their usual location of the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the ceremony was held outdoors in tent across the street with a live, socially-distanced, mask-wearing celebrity audience. Live performances occurred indoors nearby.
Billie Eilish won record of the year for the second year in row with “Everything I Wanted.” Taylor Swift won her 11th Grammy for Best Album for Folklore. Harry Styles joined Stallion in being first time Grammy winners. Beyoncé’s daughter Blue Ivy also won her first Grammy at nine-years-old earlier in the day.
In a year with few concerts able to occur, fans were able to experience live music in performances from Swift, Eilish, Styles, Stallion, Cardi B, Dua Lipa, BTS, Bad Bunny, Black Pumas, DaBaby, Doja Cat, Haim, Miranda Lambert, Post Malone and others.
