Beyonce Donates $100,000 In Scholarships To Historically Black Colleges

Her “BeyGOOD” initiative will donate $25,000 to one student from four different HBCUs for the 2018-2019 academic school year through her “Homecoming Scholars Awards Program.” She will be donating to Xavier University of Louisiana, Wilberforce University, Tuskegee University and Bethune-Cookman University.

This is not the first time the singer is giving back to schools. Last year, she established a scholarship in honor the one-year anniversary of her visual album Lemonade. Similar to the album’s overall theme of women in power, her first scholarship spotlighted the success of young women achieving success in college. The program is for “young women who are bold, creative, conscious, confident and unafraid to think outside of the box,” she said.

However, this year’s scholarship will expand the qualifications required. Applicants must be pursuing literature, creative arts, African American studies, science, education, business, communications, social sciences, computer science or engineering. They must also maintain a 3.5 GPA. Each university will announce their respective winners over the summer.

Ivy McGregor, the Director of Philanthropy and Corporate Relations at Parkwood Entertainment, which houses “BeyGOOD” said the program wants to praise “the rich legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.” She added, “We honor all institutions of higher learning for maintaining culture and creating environments for optimal learning which expands dreams and the seas of possibilities for students.”
