The Lion King is being reimagined for a live-action film, and Beyoncé and Donald Glover will be the leads.
Glover will play main character Simba and Beyoncé will play love interest Nala. The Disney film will also feature James Earl Jones as he reprises his role as Mufasa from the 1994 animated film. Others involved in the film include Chiwetel Ejiofor, Seth Rogan, John Oliver, and Keegan-Michael Key.
Jon Favreau will direct, and his version will offer a “new take” on the classic story. Also, according to Disney, the film will feature “pioneering filmmaking techniques.” Though the film will be live-action, the actors starring will not actually appear on screen, but their voices will be heard. Disney has been on a live-action kick the past few years, remaking hits like The Jungle Book, Cinderella, and, most recently, Beauty and the Beast.
Beyoncé is the latest actress to sign on to the project, which is set to hit theaters July 19, 2019. The original Lion King is still one of the highest-grossing animated films ever, earning $968.5 million at the box office. It’s musical adaptation debuted on Broadway in 1997 and has garnered at least $6.2 billion in ticket sales.
