Beyoncé called viewers to action on Sunday in her acceptance speech during the virtual broadcasting of the BET Awards. As she accepted the Humanitarian Award, she encouraged people to use their vote and “change and dismantle a racist and unequal system.”
“I want to dedicate this award to all of my brothers out there, all of my sisters out there inspiring me, marching and fighting for change,” Beyoncé stated. “Your voices are being heard and you’re proving to our ancestors that their struggles were not in vain. Now we have one more thing we need to do to walk in our true power, and that is to vote.”
She added, “I’m encouraging you to continue to take action, continue to change and dismantle a racist and unequal system. There are people banking on us staying at home during local elections and primaries happening in states across the country. We have to vote like our life depends on it, because it does.”
Beyoncé was presented the award by Michelle Obama, who was being celebrated for her work with the BEYGood Foundation, Beyoncé’s non-profit organization which she has been using for COVID-19 relief and to raise money and awareness for Black Lives Matter movements.
Blue Ivy Carter, who is Beyoncé’s daughter, WizKid and Saint Jhn all also took home a BET HER award for the song “Brown Skin Girl,” which was featured in the 2019 version of The Lion King.
Beyoncé had released a song “Black Parade” earlier this month and is set to release a visual album on July 31 on Disney+ titled Black Is King.
Other artists featured at the 2020 BET Awards were Roddy Ricch for winning Best New Artist and Album of the Year for Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial, and Megan Thee Stallion for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and Viewers Choice.

Yes, BET is a racist and unequal institution, but is it really the best time to be calling them out while accepting an award from them?
