Betty White, 92, found herself the victim of yet another Internet celebrity death hoax after a satirical article wrote that the comedic actress “dyed” in her home.
The article, posted to Empire News on Wednesday, Sept. 3, ran with the headline, “Actress Betty White, 92, Dyes Peacefully In Her Los Angeles Home.” ‘Dyes’ – spelled with a ‘y’ – here refers to the act of chemically changing one’s hair color, as opposed to ‘d-i-e-s’, which would signify a death. The unfortunate homophone led many to believe that White had actually died in her home.
'RIP Betty White' even became a trending topic on Twitter, causing White’s agent, Jeff Witjas, to release a clarifying statement. Witjas assured fans that White was alive and well, saying, “She is on the set shooting Hot in Cleveland right now.”
