Ben Affleck revealed a newly shaved and gray-haired look last week after buzzing off his beard during an Oscar after party.

Affleck was spotted without the good luck charm facial hair for the first time last Thursday, after word had gotten out he’d shaved it off after winning the Best Picture Oscar for Argo. His wife, Jennifer Garner, had reportedly carried clippers with her on the night of the Academy Awards – obviously eager for her husband to be rid of the beard. He buzzed it off at Craig’s in West Hollywood in the company of friends, including George Clooney.

“The family wanted him to shave,” a source at the party told Yahoo!. “It took place in the hallway.”

The actor/director sported the thick facial hair for his portrayal of Tony Mendez in Argo, and opted to maintain it for good luck throughout award season. It proved successful as Affleck took home his first Oscar since the one he received with Matt Damon in 1998 for Best Screenplay for Good Will Hunting.

However, the beard wasn’t Affleck’s only superstition. His two daughters, Violet and Seraphina, wrote well-wishing messages on his hands before each award’s ceremony. On Oscar night, the scribbled message, “I heart Papa,” could be seen on the back of Affleck’s hand.
