Ben Affleck was noticeably disappointed after the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in March 2016 was met with unfavorable reviews, receiving a paltry 27% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Affleck’s sour reaction is understandable, especially since Affleck had been jubilantly hyping up the film prior to its release. A source close to Affleck claimed: “Affleck was incredibly unhappy about the reception of BvS. He felt humiliated after spending so much of the press tour saying how much better this film would be than Daredevil.”
The movie Daredevil was the last time Affleck had donned a superhero costume on screen; it was released in 2013 and also garnered poor reviews, receiving a 44% on Rotten Tomatoes.
What many deemed as a flop of a film, however, has not discouraged Affleck completely — the 44-year-old actor is now working on a solo Batman movie. Affleck has been writing the script with Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, who published the enticing Justice League stories.
When asked what it’s like to co-write with someone, Affleck replied, “We just break it up. He takes halves and I take halves and then we write. And then we switch material. And then he goes over mine and I go over his.”
Though some have criticized BvS: Dawn of Justice as a disaster, Affleck seems not to have viewed it that way. He said the movie taught him “a tremendous amount” on how blockbuster movies are made.
Affleck told BBC Radio 1: “I learned a ton actually, making that movie. I had not made a movie of that scale. I didn’t know what the technology was capable of doing nowadays.”
And on his new upcoming solo Batman film, Affleck has nothing but words of confidence.
“We’re going to make something really special. We’re going to take the time to make it right. We’re going to do it good. We’re going to do it the right way and the fans are going to love it,” Affleck promised.
