Bella Thorne revealed on Monday that she was sexually abused as a child for years. Hours later, she uploaded a video of herself crying as her fans shared their own stories.
Thorne shared that she was sexually abused nightly until she was 14-years-old in an Instagram post. “I was sexually abused and physically growing up from the day I can remember till I was 14..when I finally had the courage to lock my door at night and sit by it. All damn night. Waiting for someone to take advantage of my life again,” Thorne wrote on social media. “Over and over I waited for it to stop and finally it did. But some of us aren’t as lucky to get out alive. Please today stand up for every soul Mistreated. #timesup,” she said.
She also tweeted Monday night, “I never knew what was right or wrong growing up..I didn’t know the person sneaking into my bed room at night was a bad person.”
After posting, fans rallied around the actress, showing support as well as telling their own stories of their abuse. Thorne addressed her 16.9 million Instagram followers with a video story, saying, “I’m on Twitter reading about all the people sharing their sexual abuse stories with me, from mine, and I just wanna say… I’m really proud of all of you guys. It’s such a… I’m really proud. Stay strong. Peace. I love you guys.” She was clearly crying in the video, and Thorne retweeted a post of her story to her Twitter page.
Thorne briefly mentioned her abuse prior to her social media activity this past weekend. In December, a Twitter user stated that s/he believed Thorne had been molested, and the actress responded simply, “Yeah, I was.”
