The BBC Two show Revolting aired a humorous sketch called “The Real Housewives of ISIS,” which has been met with a lot of controversy on social media.
“It’s important not to pull your punches in satire,” said show co-creator Heydon Prowse. “You have to be fearless or it undermines your credibility.” Prowse and fellow co-creator Jolyon Rubinstein often use politics, business, and religion in their humor.
A lot of viewers were upset by the sketch, which starts with a woman named Afsana worrying about what to wear to a scheduled beheading. She tries on a suicide vest to show to her friends, who respond well, with one captioning a photo on her phone with, “Hashtag OMG, hashtag Jihadi Jane, hashtag death to the West, ISIS emojis.”
“The BBC really made a satirical show called ‘The Real Housewives of ISIS,’ while the real housewives of ISIS are being raped and abused daily,” one person wrote on Twitter. Many critics are upset by the humor placed on real life terrors for women in the Islamic Terrorist regime, including sex slavery, rape, and beatings.
Others believe that making fun of something serious takes away some of that thing’s power, so think turning ISIS into a comedy will make people less afraid. “I like it,” said a Muslim man on the BBC Two’s Facebook page. “It’s making fun of ISIS which is a good thing. The whole point of satire is to bring people down to a level. If you can mock something, you’re not scared of it. ISIS wants to be feared. Don’t give them that.”
