Battle Of The Divas: Patti LuPone Says She’s ‘Not Friends’ With Audra McDonald, Disses Her ‘Gypsy’ Performance
Broadway diva Patti LuPone stated during an interview that she and fellow theater star Audra McDonald are “not friends,” and she also appeared to slam McDonald’s performance in the recently revived Broadway musical Gypsy.
During an interview with The New Yorker, LuPone stated that McDonald was “not a friend” and that the two of them had drifted apart a long time ago. The reporter also mentioned that the singer did not care to elaborate.
LuPone was then asked by the reporter what she thought about McDonald’s performance as Mama Rose, the main character in Gypsy, for which she was praised in numerous reviews of this musical’s revival.
Schulman then mentioned that, upon hearing this question, the singer “stared at him in silence for 15 seconds.”
“Then she turned to the window and sighed, ‘What a beautiful day,'” he went on to say.
Since 1959, the role of Mama Rose has been passed down to various actresses, including Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly and LuPone herself.
LuPone is not known for subtlety.
In May 2017, LuPone called Madonna a “movie killer” during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, where she promoted her Broadway show War Paint.
During an episode of Hot Ones on September 10, 2024, the singer also condemned Kim Kardashian’s acting skills for the second time publicly while promoting the show Agatha All Along with her co-star, Aubrey Plaza.
