Barry Switzer, former NFL coach to the Dallas Cowboys and the Oklahoma Sooners, found a new home for a puppy he saw baking in a hot car.
While shopping in Oklahoma, Switzer reportedly caught sight of a Rottweiler puppy sitting in a hot van with the windows down. Switzer became concerned for the animal and waited for the owners to return to their car before he bought the dog on the spot and removed it from the hot car.
Many are praising Switzer for ‘saving’ the dog’s life, but Switzer rejected the idea.
“I don’t think I saved the puppy’s life. I think the puppy had a life, but it wasn’t going to be as good as it’s life is going to be now,” Switzer told NFL AM.
Switzer told KJRH that he quickly brought the dog, which he christened Stella, to the vet’s office for a checkup.
“I told the doc I want rabies shots, check for worms, everything. They even clipped the toenails so it was a pedicure for her. She went to the spa,” Switzer told the news station.
Switzer tweeted a picture of himself and the healthy pup after their visit to the vet on August 7.
While looking for a permanent home for Stella, Switzer, known for his love of dogs in addition to his presence on the football field, brought Stella home with him to be cared for.
“I want some loving family who loves dogs and cares about dogs like I do to be able to have her,” Switzer said.
Switzer reportedly found a home for Stella with a family who lost their home to the Moore tornado last year.
