Barbie and Ken have been an item for over 50 years, and he is finally getting an up-to-date makeover.
Toy maker Mattel has unveiled 15 new looks for Ken, including man buns, freckles, and a new slew of hipster outfits. This comes a year and a half after Barbie’s makeover, which introduced three new body types – tall, petite, and curvy. Ken will also be available in three body types – broad, slim, and original.
In addition, Ken can be purchased in seven skin tones, eight hair colors, and nine hairstyles. Mattel is hoping the new looks will bolster declining sales. These dolls extend the Fashionista line, now featuring 40 different dolls representing seven body types, 11 skin tones, and 28 hairstyles.
“We are redefining what a Barbie or Ken doll looks like to this generation,” said SVP and GM of Barbie Lisa McKnight. “Evolving Ken was a natural evolution for the brand and allows girls to further personalize the role they want him to play in Barbie’s world.”
The new Kens will also feature “modernized fashions,” ranging from business casual to athletic clothing. The examples in the company announcement showed plaid shirts, jean shorts, and skinny jeans.
“Introducing the New Crew–the most diverse Fashionistas lineup to date–offering even more skin tones, eye colors, hairstyles, and fashions for Barbie and Ken!” said the company’s Instagram post. “With 3 body types for Ken: broad, slim, and original, fans have more choices for the ultimate storytelling experience. #TheDollEvolves.”
