Mattel released a new doll for their Barbie Collection and it depicts the face of famed filmmaker Ava DuVernay.
The doll was put on sale today at 1 p.m. today on both Amazon and the Barbie Collection series website. Lots of consumers were praising both Mattel and Barbie in letting millions of girls be who they want to be, starting with the DuVernay doll. In April, Mattel announced they would be releasing a special edition of Barbie with six influential women’s facing being used on the dolls. This was to celebrate Variety Magazine’s Power of Women Luncheon, which showcased DuVernay, actress Kristin Chenoweth and fashion magazine editor Eva Chen. “Barbie has always represented that girls have choices, and this spring we are proud to honor six ‘Sheroes’ who through their trade and philanthropic efforts are an inspiration to girls,” said Barbie general manager Evelyn Mazzocco.
DuVernay has stated that proceeds from the doll sale will benefit both the civil rights advocacy group ColorOfChange.org and human rights non-profit Witness.
The 43-year-old filmmaker is best known for her independent film Middle of Nowhere, which saw her win Best Director Prize at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, making her the first African-American woman to win the award. Her major motion picture Selma saw her get widespread acclaim including her nomination for Best Director at the Golden Globes. The film also received nominations at the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Original Song.
