Barbara Walters To Retire From ‘The View’

Barbara Walters is set to retire from The View, the daytime talk show she co-founded with Bill Geddie in 1997.

Walters will be announcing her retirement in May of this year, Deadline reported. She will officially retire from the ABC talk show in May of 2014, a source close to the plans told The Huffington Post. In the intervening year, there will be multiple specials focusing on Walters' rich career in broadcast journalism.

There’s no doubt that Walters has had an impressive career in journalism, and served to pave the way for women who followed her into the field. After getting her start on the Today show, she went on to work at ABC News for decades in which she held major interviews and uncovered headlining scoops.

Walters, 83, has battled a variety of health issues in the last few years. Most recently, she suffered a concussion after taking a spill at the British Embassy during inauguration week. She’s also undergone heart surgery and battled a bout of the chicken pox.

Joy Behar, who joined The View at its start alongside Walters, announced she would be leaving the show at the end of this season earlier this year. Elisabeth Hasselbeck is also rumored to be leaving the talk show at the end of the current season. There’s been no word yet as to who will be filling any of the departing hosts' spots on The View’s roundtable.
