Malia Obama moved into her Harvard campus residence on Monday, officially becoming a freshman in the class of 2021.
The 19-year-old had help moving in by her famous parents, Barack and Michelle Obama. The university’s Opening Day activities will continue until the fall semester begins on Aug. 30.
Malia graduated from DC’s private Sidwell Friends School last June. She took a gap year before joining her freshman class at Harvard, working for various movie studios and producers and attending music festivals in the meantime. She completed one internship at the Weinstein Company, and she also attended the Sundance Film Festival in January.
In December, President Obama noted that his two daughters were “ready to get out, just out from their parents’ house. The fact that their parents’ house is the White House may add to it. But Malia’s going off to college. She’s a grown woman.”
The former President added that leaving the White House was a sentimental moment for the family. “It is different for them than for most kids in that when they leave, they won’t be able to come back home. Malia’s spoken about how she regrets the fact that she won’t have that home base in the same way,” he told People.
