Bankruptcy Judge Rejects The Onion’s Bid To Buy Right-Wing Media Company InfoWars

On Tuesday, a bankruptcy judge rejected a bid from the parent company of the satirical news source The Onion to buy far right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones media empire.

The Onion’s parent company, Global Tetrahedron, was named the winner of the auction last month by a court-appointed trustee, but after a two-day hearing, Judge Christopher Lopez declared that the company had not submitted the best bid, and the announcement the previous month was premature and inaccurate, as he would be rejecting the company’s offer.

Lopez stated, “I don’t think it’s enough money…I’m going to not approve the sale,” in a late-night ruling and further said that he did not believe the bidding process maximized the value for Jones creditors, which include the Sandy Hook families.

The Sandy Hook shooting, which took place in 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, killed six educators and 20 first graders. Following the tragedy, Jones spent years on his fake news source InfoWars pushing the baseless and insensitive claim that the shooting was a hoax. In August 2018, he admitted in court that the shooting had happened and in October 2022, he was ordered to pay the eight families nearly $1 billion in a defamation lawsuit.

In a statement, CEO of Global Tetrahedron Ben Collins acknowledged for the company, “We are deeply disappointed in today’s decision, but The Onion will continue to seek a resolution that helps the Sandy Hook families receive a positive outcome for the horror they endured. We will also continue to seek a path towards pushing InfoWars.”

The implications of Global Tetrahedron buying Jones’ far-right empire are sizable, as the left-leaning company wanted to use his platforms to promote very different messages than other conservative groups interested in acquiring the news source.

Attorney for the Connecticut families Chris Mattei shared that they were also disappointed, and said in a statement, “These families, who have already persevered through countless delays and roadblocks, remain resilient and determined as ever to hold Alex Jones and his corrupt businesses accountable for the harm he has caused.”
