New York’s esteemed Ballet Hispanico held its annual gala on Monday night at the Plaza Hotel. The event raised over $1.2 million for its community outreach programs. Ballet Hispanico honored Lourdes Lopez, the artistic director of the Miami City Ballet, with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Lopez was a Principal Dancer with the New York City Ballet.
Political notes were hit at the event as well. “At this time, in this world, with this kind of intense need for human connection, we are raising our hand to be the Latino voice for artistic excellence, cultural unity, and inclusion, filling a void that has existed for far too long,” said Board Chair Kate Lear. “The time is now for Ballet Hispánico to cement its legacy as a cultural force. And with your help, we are able to do just that.”
