The 2018 BAFTA Awards nominees were announced Wednesday morning, and Guillermo del Toro‘s bizarre love story The Shape of Water leads the pack with 12 nods.
The ceremony’s host will be Joanna Lumley, who says she is excited, but also hopes to get the tone right, given the sexual harassment scandals that continue to plague the industry. “My job will be to let other people set the tone. If they want to wear black, they will wear black, if they want to speak about abuse within the film industry, they can. If they want to celebrate film or talk about a particular role…how thrilling, how marvelous,” she said. “We want people to feel proud to be there, happy to be there, thrilled to hear what is said.” BAFTA chief executive Amanda Berry says she hopes the ceremony will follow in the footsteps of the Golden Globes. “What was particularly moving for me [at the Globes] was how thoughtful the statements were,” she shared. “This is about making change and all working together to ensure that change happens.”
Despite the movement, not many women were nominated in the big categories. No women were nominated in the best director category, and no female-directed film was up for best film. Further, all nominees in the directing category are white men. Berry acknowledges this lack, but also points to the five female directors being honored in other categories, including Lucy Cohen (Kingdom of Us) and Rungano Nyoni (I am Not a Witch) in the outstanding debut section. “The change is definitely coming,” Berry said.
