The Bachelorette returned Monday with the second episode of JoJo Fletcher‘s season, which promised two group dates and a one-on-one.
For the first group date, JoJo invites Luke, Grant, Will, Evan, Daniel, Vinny, Ali, James F., Wells and Robby on a fire-fighting challenge. At a nearby fire academy, the men compete for alone time with the bachelorette, with Grant – the actual fire-fighter – the clear front-runner. Wells, who struggles through the competition, ends up requiring a water break, earning him some unexpected time with JoJo – and a spot in the top 3. Wells, along with Grant and Luke, are tasked with saving JoJo from the top of a building. Unsurprisingly, it’s Grant who is the victor. In his alone time with JoJo, he gets his first kiss with the bachelorette. A bit more surprising is that Wells gets the date rose.
Back at the house, Chad is gearing up for his next moment with JoJo by doing pull-ups and consuming protein powder, while the rest of the men are working on a song for her. When the next date card comes in, it’s revealed that Derek gets the coveted one-on-one date for the week.
JoJo takes Derek on a private jet to San Francisco, where they have a picnic with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Getting to know each other, JoJo learns that Derek has struggled with opening up in relationships after getting cheated on by his last serious girlfriend. In the end, Derek gets a date rose.
Chad, who has become bad boy pals with Canadian Daniel, is going on the second group date with Jordan, Christian, Nick, James T., and Alex to SportsNation, where they will profess their love for JoJo in front of hosts Marcellus Wiley and Max Kellerman. Their challenges include performing celebratory dances, dizzy bat proposals and a press conference about their budding relationships with JoJo. In the end, James T., Chad and Alex are the top 3. Though both James T. and Chad get their first kisses with JoJo on the date, it’s James – who made her cry with a sweet note – who gets the date rose.
The cocktail party gets off to a rocky start when Chad jumps the gun and intercepts JoJo before she arrives and walks in with her, aggravating all of the guys. Chase then steals JoJo away and provides some fake snow for a romantic moment. Chad eventually gets JoJo alone again and is soon confronted by the other guys, who he calls a bunch of Care Bears.
Despite Chad’s alienation of all of the fellow suitors, JoJo gives him a rose. She also gives roses to Alex, Christian, Robby, Luke, Chase, Jordan, Grant, Ali, Daniel, James F., Nick, Vinny and Evan. Since Wells, Derek and James T., already received roses, it means it’s the end of the road for Will, Brandon and James S.
