Chris Soules, after weeks of narrowing down the 30 women who arrived at the Bachelor mansion, has to pick a potential wife from the final two – Whitney Bischoff and Becca Tilley.
Whitney is the first of the two to head to Arlington for some time with Chris and the Soules family. Looking to make a good impression, Whitney chats up a storm, sharing anecdotes from when she brought Chris to the fertility clinic she works at and watching seasons of The Bachelor with her friends before she joined the show herself. The last thing she wants to tell the family is that she’s in love with Chris.
When she gets some time alone with Chris’ sisters, Whitney tells them that she has no reservations about the prospect of moving to Arlington and starting a family. She’s also looking forward to getting close to their parents, to whom she also professes her all-encompassing love for Chris. In the end, Chris’ sisters are perhaps more infatuated with Whitney than he is, as he talks about how “witty and charming” Becca is. His sisters, particularly Lori, thinks that what he likes about Becca doesn’t equate to love.
Once Becca’s turn with the family arrives, they’re pleasantly surprised that she opts to greet them with cookies instead of flowers. Her sense of humor also wins them over, as none of them can contain their laughter as she makes gentle cracks about their small town. Unlike Whitney, however, Becca doesn’t tell the family how much she loves their golden boy.
Becca admits to the Soules sisters that while she’s certainly falling for Chris, she’s not quite in love yet. She’s also not ready to jump into marriage and start making babies right away. In fact, if Chris were to choose her, she’d be content with a long distance relationship until they had a strong enough foundation for her to consider the major move. Chris’ mom later informs Becca that she likely loves him but just hasn’t named the feelings she has for him yet, and that the ball may very well be in her court. Chris’ sisters, ever the Whitney loyalists, urge him to be wary of Becca’s hesitation.
Following the family time, Chris and Becca have a casual date at her hotel room. The date is mostly just a drawn out conversation about the status of their relationship and where Becca stands. She can’t answer the five-year plan question because she really isn’t sure. She’s also not sure if she’s in love with Chris, or what steps would be involved in their relationship. As for moving to Arlington, she’s not prepared to give him a concrete answer about that either. Despite all of Becca’s uncertainty, Chris thinks he loves her and that she might be worth taking the risk on, which leads him to a breakdown in the interview room.
The next day, Chris reunites with Whitney for a date harvesting corn with Chris’s dad on his 800 acres of farmland. Back at Whitney’s hotel, Chris is happy to see a framed photo of them from their wedding-crashing date earlier on in the season. Whitney, as per usual, proceeds to talk his ear off, telling him how much she enjoys the simple things and being domestic. With him, she just feels “that thing.” The slightly less loquacious Chris says her feelings are reciprocated.
The final rose ceremony, in a departure from past seasons, happens in a barn – the barn where Chris raised his first pig to be exact. The first woman out of a limo is Becca. Letting her down easily, Chris tells her that while he could see a future with her, they’re not quite on the same page and that his heart and gut are leading him elsewhere. At first, Becca seems stoic, but in the car she admits that she worries that she’ll get home and realize she was in love with him the whole time.
When Whitney exits the second limo, she’s shaking with nerves. Chris tells her that he thought she was perfect for him from their first date and that he’s in love with her. After saying that they feel perfect together, he gets down on one knee and proposes. Whitney, without hesitation, says yes and takes the Neil Lane diamond ring and the final rose.
In the After the Final Rose special, Chris is unwavering about the perfection of his relationship with Whitney and does not think that if Becca had said she loved him it would have changed his decision. He also rejects the notion that Becca being somewhat hard to get had been what attracted him to her. As for Becca, she’s grateful for the show, as it’s opened her up to the idea of falling in love with somebody. When Whitney comes out, she echoes Chris’ words about their love and says they’re making love as often as possible.
