‘Avengers: Endgame’ Movie Review Roundup: Critics Rave That Is A ‘Perfect Goodbye’

The endgame is here. After eleven years, the original characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which began back in 2008 with the release of Iron Man, are singing their swan song. Avengers: Endgame, which picks up right after the devastating ending of last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, will hit theaters on Friday – and critics are positive fans won’t be disappointed.

“It’s hard to see serious MCU fans walking away from this disappointed,” writes Roger Ebert‘s Brian Tallerico. “It checks all the boxes, even ticking off a few ones that fans won’t expect to be on the list. It’s a satisfying end to a chapter of blockbuster history that will be hard to top for pure spectacle.”

Although Endgame marks the 22nd film in the MCU, critics were pleasantly surprised by how fresh and original the film turned out to be. The Washington Post‘s Michael O’Sullivan lauded the film for its “real emotion,” while Vulture‘s David Edelstein said that “even at three-plus hours, the gargantuan Avengers: Endgame is light on its feet and more freely inventive than it needed to be.”

The film is directed by MCU experts Anthony and Joe Russo, with a script penned by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeeley, who wrote Infinity War. The star-studded cast includes appearances from almost every MCU character ever, but focuses on the original 2012 AvengersRobert Downey Jr.‘s Iron Man, Chris Evans‘ Captain America, Scarlett Johansson‘s Black Widow, Mark Ruffalo‘s Hulk, Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor, and Jeremy Renner‘s Hawkeye. Although critics have been careful to heed Marvel’s request not to ruin the movie for fans, The Associated Press‘s Jake Coyle praised the Russo brothers’ film for its generosity in “humor, spirit and sentimentality” and promises it’s a film that offers “a dose of finality” in “a universe where death is seldom visited on anyone but the bad guys.”

It’s the “perfect goodbye,” said David Sims of The Atlantic.
