Audio of the 911 call made by a hotel employee on the night of Chris Cornell‘s death has been release, as well as photos of the scene from police reports.
In the call, the employee states, “I have a non-responsive guest in the hotel, it’s gonna be a 50-year-old male inside Room 1136.” He confirms the man is not breathing. “They found out that the guest is attempting to hang himself, so they’re trying to get him down so they can assist with CPR.”
Cornell’s wife Vicky Cornell, meanwhile, called the singer’s bodyguard Martin Kirsten to check on him “because he did not sound like he was okay.” According to police documents, Vicky also called the front desk, where she claims a woman hung up on her. Kirsten then kicked down the main door of Cornell’s hotel room and found him with an exercise band around his neck.
Medics arrived and attempted to resuscitate Cornell, but they were unsuccessful and Cornell was pronounced dead at 1:30 am on May 18. In addition to the 911 audio, photos from the hotel room have also been released under the Freedom of Information Act.
The lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave was found with various prescription drugs in his system, but his cause of death was officially ruled as suicide by hanging. Vicky Cornell maintains that her husband did not want to die, and that it must have had to do with the drugs. “He was on a rant,” when she spoke to him before his death. “I said, ‘You need to tell me what you took,’ and he just got mean. That wasn’t my Chris,” Vicky says.
Cornell had struggled with substance abuse and addiction since he was a teen. He first got sober in 2003 but relapsed in 2009. Vicky thinks he was on the verge of relapse again and that she missed the signs. Cornell leaves behind three children – Toni, 12, Christopher, 11, and Lily, 17, from a previous marriage.
