Nostalgic plug-and-play devices aren’t an uncommon phenomena in the video game industry, with premiere manufacturers like Nintendo participating in this market. Their successful-but-short-lived NES Classic Edition will receive a successor this September, and Atari is stepping up to deliver more retro callbacks with the four iterations of the Atari Flashback 8.
Atari, one of the pioneering forces in this industry, is no stranger to re-releasing their back catalog through their Atari Flashback line. AtGames Digital Media is producing the new family members.
Four new units are forthcoming, three of which being the Atari Flashback 8 Gold, Atari Flashback 8 Classic Game Console and the Atari Flashback Portable Game Player. They respectively have 120, 105 and 70 titles built-in, with the latter featuring key brands like Pac-Man and Frogger.
Also forthcoming is the Atari Flashback 8 Gold Activision Edition Console, which hosts 130 different games channeling its era. As this machine’s name suggests, Activision will contribute some of their golden age titles as well.
The specific launch date for these consoles has yet to be announced, though their prices have been; the Atari Flashback 8 and Portable Edition will retail for $59.99, and the Atari Flashback Gold and Gold Activision Edition will cost $79.99. Moreover, the Gold Editions will support “720p HDMI output, scan line filtering, and a save/pause/rewind feature for every game.”
The specific titles that will appear in each iteration of the Atari Flashback varies, as does the quantity. Here’s the list that comprises the Atari Flashback 8 Gold Activision Edition Console:
