At 18, Suri Cruise Still Has ‘No Relationship’ With Father Tom Cruise, Won’t Join Scientology

On Thursday, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ daughter, Suri Cruise, turns 18 years old. 

Suri rose to fame as an infant in 2006 when she was featured on the cover of Vanity Fair with Cruise and Holmes at five months old. Photographed by Annie Leibowitz, the cover shows Cruise swaddling a young Suri in his jacket as Holmes looks down in adoration.

In 2012, Holmes filed for divorce after six years of marriage. Following the divorce and Cruise’s involvement with the group Scientology, Holmes has kept Suri out of the spotlight and away from Cruise. Suri has no relationship with Cruise.

In 2023, Holmes told Glamour magazine she was protecting Suri from the public because “she was so visible at a young age.”

Suri’s last public appearance with her father was at Disney World Florida in July 2012. Photographs captured the father-daughter pair attending rides and spending time together at the amusement park. 

Although Suri and Cruise are not in contact, Cruise agreed to pay Holmes and Suri $400,000 yearly until their daughter turns 18. With her birthday approaching, the question of whether Suri will return to the public eye and to her father still stands. Holmes signed non-disclosure agreements during the divorce, prohibiting her from talking about Scientology and her marriage to Cruise.

Due to Suri’s young age at the time and her inability to formally sign any papers, at 18 years old, Suri may open up about her relationship with her father and Scientology.

Cruise is considered Scientology’s most famous and influential figure. Cruise’s prominence in the group has raised concerns about actions the group may have taken against Holmes and possibly Cruise’s other ex-wife, Nicole Kidman. Members who leave are considered “suppressive persons” and remaining members are not allowed to keep in contact with them. 

When speaking about Suri in 2017, Holmes said, “You want them to stay with you forever, but they’re these amazing beings, and you have to do everything you can to give them what they need—and then they’re going to go.”

From his marriage with Kidman, Cruise’s other children, Bella and Connor Cruise, have maintained a relationship with their father after their parents split. Bella and Connor reportedly have a strained relationship with Kidman.
