Arrested Development finally has a premiere date for its highly anticipated reunion season on Netflix. The video streaming company announced on Thursday that the cult comedy will debut at 12:01 PT on May 26.
Originally broadcast on Fox, Arrested Development ran for three seasons from 2003 to 2006. Although the offbeat series failed to do well in the ratings, it was a critical darling and picked up a devoted cult following. With the show's newfound popularity, rumors started to swirl that an Arrested Development feature film was in the works. While a movie hasn’t happened yet, AD devotees will soon be getting 15 new episodes of the series.
Netflix, which had originally paid to produce 10 episodes of the show, announced there would be 14 in January before announcing they had settled on 15 today.
And what about that rumored movie? Mitchell Hurwitz, series creator, planned the 15 episodes to be a prequel for the possible film project. The reunited cast, including Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Portia de Rossi, Michael Cera, David Cross, Jessica Walter, Tony Hale, Jeffrey Tambor and Alia Shawkat would all be on board, he told Entertainment Weekly.
While previous reports suggested that Netflix would only be the home of Arrested Development for a single season, there’s now reason to hope that the series could return for more. A spokesperson for the company insinuated they’re optimistic that additional seasons of Arrested Development might make their way onto Netflix.
