Arnold Schwarzenegger Opens Up About Past Steroid Use, Warns Young Bodybuilders About Its Dangers
After using anabolic steroids throughout his career, Arnold Schwarzenegger has told young bodybuilders to not abuse the drug.
In his July/August cover story for Men’s Health, Schwarzenegger shared his past experience taking steroids, including Dianabol and testosterone. He told the magazine that he took 100 milligrams of testosterone a week and 15 milligrams of Dianabol a day. This was before steroids were made illegal in 1990 under Congress’ Anabolic Steroids Control Act.

But Schwarzenegger also noted that his history is nothing when compared to the performance-enhancing drug abuse that occurs in modern bodybuilding. He said that he only took steroids according to his doctor’s direction.
“Bodybuilding always, always was considered a safe sport. But now it’s not. Now people are dying — they’re dying because of overdoses of drugs and they don’t know what the f— they’re doing,” he said. “They’re listening to charlatans.”
Although he recognizes it as a quicker pathway to making money and gaining notoriety, Schwarzenegger wants today’s bodybuilders to avoid using steroids. He cited seeing people needing kidney transplants and “suffering tremendously” from the drug.
He also acknowledged that, due to his past use, he may be the wrong person to send the message, but he insisted that his exposure to the drug convinced him to warn others about the dangers of misuse. The actor says he now only trains to “stay alive, to be able to do my movies.”
