Ariel Winter called out body shamers on Instagram yesterday after the actress heard backlash over a dress she wore to a Modern Family panel on May 3.

The dress showed large amounts of skin and cleavage and appeared to be far less casual than the clothes of her co-stars’.  After the event, many media outlets and fans commented on her dress, ignoring everything and everyone else from the panel.

“Why TF does anyone care that I didn’t dress casual like everyone else for the panel? Why do I have to be like everyone else?,” Winter wrote on Instagram.

“Why can’t people just let other people feel good about themselves and do what they want? WEAR WHATEVER YOU WANT PEOPLE! As long as you feel good about yourself that’s what matters. I know I did.”

Winter, 19, has played Alex Dunphy on Modern Family since she was 10-years-old, and has grown up in front of the audience’s eyes. She has received backlash in the past for wearing revealing clothing but has always stuck by her choices.

Winter underwent breast reduction surgery back in 2015 and has been very open about her experience.

“It’s something that I did to better my life and better my health, and I think that can benefit a lot of young girls,” Winter told Glamour in 2015. “I have felt happier with myself than I ever have. I am living a dream that a lot of girls my age would love to be living, and I’m aware of that. I’m really grateful that I’m able to do that and have a voice that I’m able to speak to teenagers. I don’t want to do anything to mess that up.”

It seems, though, that helping girls her age with body issues is a job she will have to continue to do.

Winter said at the end of her post “Don’t ever let anyone stifle who you are and how you express yourself. Rant over :)”
