Ariel Castro’s Death Possibly A Result of Auto-Erotic Asphyxiation, Not Suicide

Ariel Castro, the late kidnapper of three Cleveland women, may not have committed suicide in his jail cell last month, according to police. It’s possible Castro may have accidentally killed himself while engaged in auto-erotic asphyxiation.

Castro was found hanging and unconscious in his cell at the Correction Reception Center in Orient, Ohio on Sept. 3. Prison reports released by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction on Thursday claim that Castro’s pants and underwear were down around his ankles when he was discovered at 9:18 p.m, reported NBC News. He had used a bed sheet to asphyxiate himself from the cell’s window.

The fact that no suicide note was found also led police to suspect that Castro may not have intentionally killed himself. In his cell, authorities only found pictures of the convicted kidnapper’s family and a Bible set open to the Gospel of John, chapters 2 and 3.

“He indicated no current suicidal thoughts or past attempts to hurt himself,” the official report reads. “There seems to be no known, substantiated motivation for the self-inflicted death.”

“These facts, however, were relayed to the Ohio State Patrol for consideration of the possibility of auto-erotic asphyxiation,” the report also states. “No other immediate observations about the scene led to conclusions about the motivation for the self-inflicted death.”

In addition to the new theory pertaining to Castro’s death, the report reveals that eight checks – which were to occur every 30 minutes – were not conducted on the day he died. Two officers had falsified the prison logs for five of the checks. Rounds were made at the 8:45 point and at 9:15 when Castro was found hanging. Before an ambulance arrived, prison staff performed CPR. Castro was pronounced dead at Ohio State University Medical Center at 10:52 p.m.
