Ariana Grande graced the outdoor stage of the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards for a preshow performance that likely made the young artist a household name overnight.
For her first number, Grande sang “Baby I,” starting out a cappella before the music and backup dancers joined her. She then seamlessly transitioned into “The Way,” sashaying off the stage onto the red carpet in her sparkling purple dress for the more energetic single. Immediately following her performance, with the crowd erupting into cheers and applause, the 20-year-old singer could be seen mouthing, “Oh my God.”
Grande expressed relief that the performance was over, talking to MTV News correspondent Sway,
"I'm dying," she told Sway. "You must be feeling great?" he asked. "Nope!" Ariana said, visibly still recovering from the jitters caused by the VMA preshow performance. "No, no, no, I'm feeling good, but I'm glad it's over."
