Ariana Grande may wish she had done a quick Google search before going to get a tattoo.
On Tuesday, the 25-year-old fell prey to a common tattoo major fail — inking incorrect Japanese kanji characters on the palm of her hands.
The pop star had intended to permanently celebrate her new single “7 Rings” with a tattoo, but instead, her fans were quick to point out that she was missing a few characters and instead had tattooed the word “shichirin,” which translates to a small Japanese-style charcoal grill.
“Ariana Grande’s new tattoo “七輪” means Japanese style bbq grill, not 7 rings. If you want to know about 七輪, just google “SHICHIRIN,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“For those who are confused, ariana grande got a tattoo on her hand in japanese intended to spell out “7 rings” and posted it on instagram (now deleted), but japanese people in the comments started saying how the REAL translation is bbq grill,” another fan wrote.
“I’M SCREAMING did ariana grande really tattoo the japanese kanji of bbq grill on her hand SIS….” another wrote.
As the caption of the original now-deleted image on Instagram which showed the palm of Grande’s hand, the “thank u, next” singer wrote “this felt super good … jk (everyone thinks this is a fake hand but it’s indeed…. my hand.”
She then later clarified that she had left out some letters off her tattoo because of the pain and said that she’s a huge fan of tiny bbq grills which is one of the things her tattoo translates to.
In the since-deleted tweet to a fan who called out the error, Grande responded, “indeed, I left out “つの指” which should have gone in between. It hurt like f—k n still looks tight. I wouldn’t have lasted one more symbol lmao. But this spot also peels a ton and won’t last so if I miss it enough I’ll suffer thru the whole thing next time.”
“also…. huge fan of tiny BBQ grills,” Grande jokingly added.
Earlier this month, the Grammy nominee released her newest single “7 Rings” for her upcoming fifth album, thank u, next. The R&B track was inspired by “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music and it speaks to Grande’s strong friendships and her new sense of independence following a difficult year that included the death of ex-boyfriend Mac Miller and her failed engagement with Pete Davidson.
Grande first opened up about the inspiration behind the single during her Billboard “Woman of the Year” cover story in December.
“It was a… challenging fall day in New York,” Grande told Billboard of what it was like writing the track. “Me and my friends went to Tiffany’s together, just because we needed some retail therapy,” she continued.

“You know how when you’re waiting at Tiffany’s they give you lots of champagne? They got us very tipsy, so we bought seven engagement rings, and when I got back to the studio I gave everybody a friendship ring,” she explained. “That’s why we have these, and that’s where the song idea came from.”
