Ariana Grande took to Facebook to defend her signature ponytail hairstyle, saying that her hair has been ruined by years of being dyed red for her acting roles and the ponytail is her only option.
Grande has been playing Cat Valentine on the Nickelodeon since 2010, when she originated the character on the hit show Victorious. She now plays Cat on her own spinoff show, Sam & Cat.
In her post, Grande reveals the role required her to bleach her naturally dark brown hair and then dye it red every two weeks, destroying her hair. She now wears a wig when filming Sam & Cat, but also needs hair extensions. As for the ponytail, Grande insists it’s a hairstyle choice made purely out of necessity.
“I wear it [my hair] in a pony tail because my actual hair is so broken that it looks absolutely ratchet and absurd when I let it down. I tried wigs, they looked RIDICULOUS,” Grande explained.
Grande also writes that she has tried to get a weave, but it hurt her scalp too much and she has resigned herself to a liberal use of hair extensions while she waits for her hair to grow out. It seems fans and critics have been going after Grande for always wearing the same look, and Grande assures those critics that it’s much more difficult for her than it is for them.
“So as annoying as it is for y’all to have to look at the same hair style all the time, it’s all that works for now (AND I’m comfortable for the first time in years),” she wrote.
Her hair may be less than satisfactory, but Grande jokes about her current use of hair extensions, writing that she wears “more fake hair than every drag queen on earth combined.”
Finally, Grande ends her note with a request to her fans to cut her some slack when it comes to her hair and focus their energy on other things. “There are way way more important things,” she writes, “Love y’all very much.”
