Apple Unveils New iOS 8 And OS X Yosemite At Worldwide Developers Conference
Apple revealed the new iOS 8, an updated operating system for iPhones, and the OS X Yosemite, the newest operating system for Mac, at their annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco on Monday.
New iOS 8 And OS X Yosemite Features
Among its perks, the iOS 8 brings a few new apps, such as HealthKit. HealthKit will be able to measure a user’s heart rate, weight, blood pressure and more and then can send it to a primary physician and the Mayo Clinic, which will respond with health tips. The HealthKit can also synch with other health-related apps like Nike +. HomeKit is another new feature, which will synch your iPhone and/or iPad with all household appliances – lights, door locks, switches and more – so that you can control the lights with your electronic device.
Interactive Notifications For iPhone
Other popular additions and tweaks to already beloved features include interactive notifications. Interactive notifications will allow users to respond directly to notifications received on their home screens, like a text or iMessage, without having to open the specific app itself. Favorite contacts will also be made more easily accessible on the home screen as well.
Many users were excited to hear about the new ‘Do Not Disturb’ feature, which allows you to opt out of receiving notifications in group texts without actually removing yourself from the conversation, meaning you can leave and then pick it back up any time. iMessage will now feature QuickType, a new way for Apple to suggest words while a user is composing a message, and the addition of voice message sent through text.
Handoff: Text From Your Mac
Both Mac OS X Yosemite and iOS 8 have improved family sharing capabilities and will facilitate the link between your Mac computer and your iPhone. Airdrop and Handoff will allow users to begin work on one device and pick it back up on another, and it will also allow you to make calls and send iMessages directly from your computer. Finally, Mac OS X Yosemite will offer some neat tricks for e-mail, in which users will be able to draw on their messages using the trackpad, better and faster photo editing (also available on iOS 8) and cheaper iCloud storage: 20GB of your videos and photos can be stored in the iCloud for 99 cents per month.
Siri also received an update. Apple announced that Siri would now be compatible with 23 new languages, including Arabic, Danish, Hebrew, Portuguese and Ukrainian.
The iOS 8 will be compatible with the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5, the iPhone 5C and the iPhone 5S. It will also be compatible with the iPod Touch fifth generation, the iPad 2, the iPad with Retina Display, the iPad Air, the iPad Mini and the iPad Mini with Retina Display.
