Apple Magic Keyboard With Numeric Keypad Review: Helping Professionals With Extra Keys

Apple’s accessories tend to be of the same caliber as their computers and smartphones. The Apple Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad recently entered the market, but is it worth the upgrade?

APPLE MAGIC KEYBOARD WITH NUMERIC KEYPAD REVIEW

The most perceptible change with this incarnation of the keyboard is the addition of its keys on the right, formerly seen on Apple’s old wired keypads. A row of numerical keys still resides near the top for those accosted to them, but the addition of the ten on the right will behoove those in particular lines of work, such as accountants and programers.

Apple boasts how the additional batch of keys enhances scrolling speeds while also providing “full-size arrow keys for gaming.” Compatible apps, such as Final Cut and various financial software, also make use of the secondary numerical buttons.

Consequentially, the keyboard is 5.5 inches longer than its predecessor. (The dimensions are otherwise identical, however.) Much like prior models, there’s an elegance to the clean design. However, CNET’s reviewer noted how its flatness can incur pain in the wrists if used for extended periods of time.

Furthermore, there are now 19 buttons that can access shortcuts, rather than the previous record of 12. The keyboard, however, isn’t backlit as some of its competitors are. While this wasn’t a necessity, it would’ve been a nice bonus.

The package also comes with a Lightning to USB Cable, allowing users to easily recharge as needed. According to Apple, the battery will maintain its charge “for about a month or more between charges.”

In terms of its requirements, your Mac must be running macOS 10.12.4 at the earliest, whereas an iOS device must be updated to at least iOS 10.3.

Purchasing the Apple Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad from Apple directly will cost $129.00. Alternatively, you can bundle one with an iMac by spending an extra $30. While its improvements may not justify a purchase for more casual users, it’s still a well-made product.
