Anthony Weiner Released From Prison For Sending Explicit Photos To A Minor

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) has been released from prison. He served 21 months after sending explicit photos of himself to an underaged girl.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Weiner is currently in the custody of a halfway house.  The 54 year old will be released on May 14. Though when he is released, he’ll have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

The halfway house, officially called a New York residential re-entry management office, is a step down from the first part of his sentence. He was previously held in custody at Federal Medical Center Devens, a men’s prison in Massachusetts. While there, his sentence was reduced by three months for good behavior.

On May 19, 2017, Weiner pleaded guilty to transferring obscene material to a minor. His then-wife, Huma Abedin, filed for divorce from him that same day.

“With full knowledge that he was communicating with a real 15-year-old girl, the defendant asked her to engage in sexually explicit conduct via Skype and Snapchat, where her body was on display, and where she was asked to sexually perform for him,” prosecutors wrote.

Before his sentencing, Weiner was the subject of three other sexting scandals. First, in 2011, Weiner used his public Twitter account to send a link to a woman following him. That link led to a sexually explicit photo of himself. Weiner resigned from congress because of the scandal. In 2013, he returned to New York City politics in the mayoral race. Weiner sent sexually explicit photos to another woman. Then, in 2016, Weiner sexted another woman more photos of himself, including one of himself in bed with his son. Less than a month later, news about his sexts with a 15-year-old girl became public.

After his stint at the halfway house, Weiner will spend the next three years out on supervised release. He’ll also have to pay a $10,000 fine on top of registering as a sex offender.
