“We can confirm the death of Anthony Bourdain in the Haute-Rhin department of France,” the Embassy said. “We extend our sincere condolences to friends and family. We stand ready to provide appropriate consular services. Out of respect for the family, we have no further comment.”
Bourdain started out as a line cook in New York and Northeast restaurants for decades before he became the executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles in Lower Manhattan. Eight years in, he submitted an article titled “Don’t Eat Before Reading This” to The New Yorker, exposing the unpleasantries of the restaurant world. They accepted it and the piece inspired Bourdain’s memoir, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly. After his book was published, Bourdain was boosted to celebrity chef status and became a host of food shows on TV.
