Activist group Anonymous recently announced their intention to use their hacking skills to help bring down terrorist group ISIS in wake of the recent Paris terror attacks that claimed the lives of 130 people. ISIS is notorious for using social media for recruitment and to spread its hateful rhetoric, so Anonymous have surmised the best way to wage their war is to disrupt their social media channels and they’re doing so in a hilariously unexpected way.
With a tactic Anonymous has labeled ‘rickrolling,’ anyone who uses a hashtag supporting ISIS will be bombarded with the sound and image of classic 80’S British pop song “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley.
The group announced the move in a tweet posted Nov. 18.
The first hashtag the group took its aim at was “Support ISIS” and have been announcing new target hashtags every day since.
No word from Astley on how he feels about his icnoic hit being used for cyber warfare.
