Ann Curry Reacts To Matt Lauer Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Former Today show anchor Ann Curry is “still processing” the news of Matt Lauer‘s sexual misconduct allegations and firing.

ANN CURRY RESPONDS TO MATT LAUER ALLEGATIONS

The pair worked at NBC News together for more than a decade before Curry, now 61, left the morning news program and Savannah Guthrie took over in 2012. Curry sat down for an already scheduled interview with People about her return to TV with a PBS docuseries We’ll Meet Again, airing in 2018. While she declined to talk about Lauer’s allegations, saying she was “still really processing it,” she did comment on what his firing means to herself and other women.

“The women’s movement got us into the workplace, but it didn’t make us safe once we got there,” Curry said, whose departure from Today was enshrouded with  rumors of sexism. “And the battle lines are now clear. We need to move this revolution forward and make our workplaces safe. Corporate America is quite clearly failing to do so, and unless it does something to change that, we need to keep doing more ourselves.”

Curry joined Today as a news anchor in 1997 before becoming a full-time co-anchor with Lauer in 2011. She was fired a year later amid controversy. Now she is focused on executive producing and hosting We’ll Meet Again, which reunited people who experienced traumatic incidents together and helped each other in times of need.

As a women who has experienced her own set of traumas, Curry feels for the women who are coming forward with stories of sexual harassment and abuse. “I admire the women who have been willing to speak up both anonymously and on the record,” she said. “Those women need to keep their jobs, and all women need to be able to work, to be able to thrive, without fear. This kind of behavior exists across industries, and it is so long overdue for it to stop. This is a moment when we all need to be a beacon of light for those women, for all women, and for ourselves.”
