Angelina Jolie attended the London premiere of longtime partner Brad Pitt’s new movie, World War Z, making her first public appearance since she revealed in an editorial that she had undergone a preventative double mastectomy earlier in the year.
Jolie, whose family has a history of breast cancer, discovered that she carried the “faulty gene” BRCA 1, which increases her risk for both breast and ovarian cancer. Her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died in 2007 after a long battle with ovarian cancer. Her aunt, Debbie Martin, passed away from breast cancer just last week. In her New York Times editorial, “My Medical Choice,” Jolie explained that the tough decision greatly reduced her own risk of a future cancer diagnosis, and that she had made the choice for the sake of her family.
"I have been very happy just to see the discussion about women's health expanded, and that means the world to me and after losing my mom to these issues,” she said at the World War Z premiere. “I am very grateful for it, and I have been very moved by the kind support from people, really very grateful for it."

Pitt, the star of the film that was premiering in London, played second fiddle on the red carpet to Jolie, responding to questions and comments amount her bold choice. "She learned a lot going through it and we learned a lot as a family going through it,” he revealed. “She thought there was something to share and that was important to her. That's who she is."
World War Z will hit theaters in the U.S. on Jun 21. Jolie will next be seen in fantasy drama Maleficent, which is due in theaters sometime in 2014.
