Angelina Jolie And Brad Pitt Take Questions At ‘By The Sea’ Screening

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt attended an official Academy screening of their new movie together, By the Sea, in New York City Tuesday.

Jolie and Pitt put on a loved up display at the screening of By the Sea, their first movie together since 2005’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith. In the film, the two play warring spouses in a toxic marriage, but in real life, the couple could not appear to be happier.

For the event at the Directors Guild of America theater, Jolie looked elegant in a pale blue tea-length dress. The long-sleeved number featured a flowing skirt and was cinched at the waist with a gold belt. At her side, Pitt went with a more casual ensemble, sporting jeans, a shirt and vest under a blazer and a newsboy hat.

Ahead of the screening, Jolie and Pitt did a rare joint interview with the Today show. During the sit-down, the actors, who’ve been together for 10 years and married for one, opened up about Jolie’s recent surgeries. In 2013, the 40-year-old actress had a double-mastectomy after testing positive for the BRCA 1 gene. And, just this past year, upon learning she could have early-stage ovarian cancer, she had her ovaries removed.

“There was no vanity to my wife’s approach,” Pitt said of how Jolie handled the decisions regarding her health. “It was mature. ‘This is our life and we’re gonna make the best of it.’ There was a strength in that. It was just another one of those things in life that makes you tighter, and she was doing it for the kids, and she was doing it for her family so we could be together.”

As for Jolie, she gushed about how her husband has supported her throughout the ordeal and into the present.

“I knew through the surgeries that he was on my side and that this wasn’t something where I was gonna feel less of a woman because my husband wasn’t gonna let that happen,” Jolie said. “To face these issues together and speak about them and talk about what it is to be human, I think can be a beautiful thing.”

During the interview, Jolie also addressed how making a film with her husband about a broken marriage could affect her own – as well as how it will read to audiences. In short, Jolie believes that her their fans are smart enough not to confuse fiction with reality.

“I’m counting on the audience to know that if it was close to us at all, we could never make this film,” Jolie said. “It’s because we actually are very stable and these aren’t our issues.”

By the Sea, which was written and directed by Joliepremieres in theaters Nov. 13.
