Andy Rooney Signs Off From 60 Minutes

In his final segment for 60 Minutes, Andy Rooney emphasized his role as a writer and downplayed his status as a famous face, choosing to go out in his signature, curmudgeonly style. Rooney, 92, recently announced that his departure from the show would soon come after 33 years and 1,097 televised essays — and it did on Sunday night.

Rooney explained that he does not think of himself as a TV man. “I don’t think of myself as a television personality,” he said. “I’m a writer who reads what he’s written.” Rooney added that he would love to go on longer. “I wish I could do this forever,” he said. “I can’t, though. But I’m not retiring. Writers don’t retire. And I’ll always be a writer.”
