Andrew Getty, the grandson of J. Paul Getty and an heir to the family’s oil fortune, was found dead in his Hollywood Hills home Tuesday. He was 47.
Getty likely died due to natural causes, according to Los Angeles County Coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter. It was initially speculated that Getty’s death could have been a result of an accidental overdose because of the medication discovered at Getty’s residence.
“The tentative information that we do have is that he was not feeling good for the last couple of months, and he supposedly had an appointment tomorrow with a personal physician,” Winter said, providing insight into why it’s believed Getty’s death was not drug related.
An unidentified woman had called police at roughly 2:15 p.m. local time Tuesday to report Getty’s condition. When authorities arrived, they found Getty dead in a bathroom of the Los Angeles area home.
Two weeks ago, Getty had sought a restraining order against a woman. It is unknown at this time whether that is the same woman who called police to the home.
As the grandson of the founder of the Getty Oil Company, the deceased was one of the heirs to the sizable Getty fortune.
Getty is survived by his parents, Gordon and Ann Getty, who’ve asked for privacy following their son’s untimely death.
