In her new Netflix special Growing, which started streaming Tuesday, Amy Schumer opened up about her husband having an autism spectrum disorder.
The comedian and her husband Chris Fischer, who are expecting their first child, have been keeping their 2018 marriage relatively under wraps. But in the new Netflix special, Schumer revealed a great deal about her husband and marriage.
“I knew from the beginning that my husband’s brain was a little different than mine,” 37-year-old Schumer said. “My husband was diagnosed with what used to be called Asperger’s. He has autism spectrum disorder. He’s on the spectrum.”
“Once he was diagnosed, it dawned on me how funny it was, because all of the characteristics that make it clear that he’s on the spectrum are all of the reasons that I fell madly in love with him,” she continued. “That’s the truth.”
The I Feel Pretty star also shared that her husband is unable to lie and “says whatever is on his mind.”
“He keeps it so real,” Schumer said. “He doesn’t care about social norms or what you expect him to say or do. If I say to him ‘Does this look like s**t?’ he’ll go ‘Yeah, you have a lot of other clothes, why don’t you wear those?'”
After reports began to surface about her comments, many people took to Twitter to share their reactions, with some calling her comments wrong while others came to the comedian’s defense.
“Why are people being so nasty about Amy Schumer revealing her husband is on the Autism Spectrum? I know this is Twitter but I’m horrified that her honest discussion about her husband has been met with mean comments,” one user wrote.
“I am sorry for her husband but when she attacks millions of people and then wants their sympathy she unfortunately is getting what she dishes out. Let the attacks begin,” another user wrote.
But Schumer carried on and even went on to thank her husband in an Instagram post about his willingness to be open with the world about himself.
“But thank you to my husband, Chris, who has kept me going during this pregnancy. His willingness and desire to be open with the world about himself and our marriage is courageous and beautiful,” the actress captioned her post. “He makes me laugh more than anyone and he laughs at me more than anyone. I am more than grateful to have found such an amazing partner and best friend.”
Earlier last year, the Trainwreck star made headlines when news broke that she and Fischer had tied the knot at a ceremony in Malibu. The couple also made headlines again when Schumer announced that she and Fischer were expecting their first child, of which she has had a rocky road because of her severe morning sickness, which caused her to be hospitalized last October.
Growing is now available to stream on Netflix.

Has everyone lost their minds? Amy's husband is in NO WAY AUTISTIC! My God media get your education on. The man presents as OCD with eccentric features. This is NOT AUTISM. What a slap in the face to millions of families across globe dealing with real autism. For God's sakes this is insane. How can the media be so clueless? How can this woman push this con job on people? Oh, that's right. Jenny McCarthy did the same thing for pr purposes. Using the autism label. Though McCarthy's kid has some seizures that left him delayed then he got seizure meds and she claimed he recovered from autism. Right. Jesus Mary and Joe has society really gotten this gulliable and moronic to believe every label someone throws out there? THESE PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE AUTISM. Schumer's husband is not autistic. Quit misleading the public. Quit lying and failing to investigate how who what when what moron would diagnose this man with autism? Nobody. Unless they were joking and then decided this would be a good PR thing to connect with others. Look, F off because those of us who are out here dealing with actual autism are sick of you fly by night phony idiots who toss this very serious label around without the slightest regard for the seriousness of famililes dealing with real autism. Not your fake autism that you pretend your husband and children have so you can get a headline. So disgusting.
