Amy Robach, 'Good Morning America' Host, Announces Breast Cancer Diagnosis After Receiving First Mammogram On Air

Amy Robach, a Good Morning America host, has been diagnosed with breast cancer after undergoing a mammogram on air as part of GMA’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month kick off.

Robach admitted that she had been putting off getting her first mammogram for a year, and, at 40 years old, she was due to get tested soon. Robach was skeptical, but went ahead with the on-air test after co-anchor Robin Roberts told her that it would be worth it if it helped save just one life. So, on Oct. 1, Robach had an on-air mammogram.

A week after her initial mammogram, Robach was called in by doctors for follow-up tests.

“I thought I was going back in for a few follow-up images, only to find out in a matter of hours that I had breast cancer,” Robach writes.

Robach will undergo surgery on Thursday, Nov. 14 for a bilateral mastectomy and reconstructive surgery before undergoing any other type of treatment.

Robach thanks the producers at Good Morning America and credits their idea to have her receive her first mastectomy on air with saving her life, writing,

“And while everyone who gets cancer is clearly unlucky, I got lucky by catching it early, and there are so many people to thank for making sure I did. Every producer, every person who urged me to do this, changed my trajectory.

“The doctors told me bluntly: ‘That mammogram just saved your life.’”

After Robach announced her diagnosis earlier this morning, she took to Twitter to thank fans for their well wishes and support.

Robach’s husband, Andrew Shue (former Melrose Place star), also Tweeted his support, as did many of Robach’s GMA co-anchors.

Robach will no doubt keep her Good Morning America audience in the loop as she goes forward.
